Humanity likes birthdays because birthdays are inherently selfish and prideful, and men are inherently selfish and prideful. For one day everyone is obliged to tell you two little words that make you blush and thank them. There's presents, which are always pretty cool, and balloons, which definitely draw attention to the situation, and the food, gluttonous amazing food. When a huge portion of the world is living in great poverty, birthdays allow us to live in even more wealth than we normally have.
And though I know it's selfish, I still enjoy it.
But also dearest, Celebration is one of the spiritual gifts.
